The reveal of the Hand Pieced QAL is coming soon (January 7th, to be exact–so mark your calendars!), and Patty and I have been getting a lot of questions about fabric requirements. This question is a little bit tough, since it totally depends on how many colors you want your quilt to be.

This is a small, sampler quilt–totally appropriate for using up those scraps! There are nine blocks that finish at 6″. The actual size will depend on how you set you blocks (Patty and I are doing it differently).

Fabric Guidelines

  • Two color quilt: (primary color plus background): 1/2 yard of primary color
  • Four color quilt: 1/4 yard of each color (fat quarter friendly)
  • Each block a different color: 1/8 yard each of nine colors

The background yardage will depend on how you decide to set the quilt.

  • Traditional setting, finishes at ~23″ x 23″: 3/4 yard background fabric
  • On-point setting, finishes at ~35″ x 35″: 1 1/4 yard background fabric

I did my version as a 4-color quilt, set traditionally. Mine is a little bit scrappy too–so if Color 1 for me is navy, then I used more than one navy print. Because why stick to just one when you have all this to choose from?

I’ve stitched up my quilt in American Jane’s Sweet Harmony line, generously supplied by Moda (available in February 2019). This line is so gorgeous–I am drawn to the darker, more saturated fabrics in this line–the navy, yellows, and reds. It also seemed so perfect for this project as it has that 1930’s feel to it, which is appropriate as we revisit this traditional skill of hand sewing.

However, this quilt does not need to lean traditional if that is not your style! Patty has gone a completely different direction with her fabric choices and layout. It’s so much fun to see how differently people approach projects. That is one of the things that I am looking forward to as we get this QAL going! I can’t wait to see your projects!

these actually are your grandmother’s quilts

The phrase, “Not your grandmother’s quilt” is so prevalent in articles about quilts these days–as if our grandmother’s quilts are somehow “less than” what we are creating today. I could not disagree more. So today, I’d like to introduce you to three quilts made by my […]
