Hand Pieced QAL: Sewing Through Seam Allowances

Hand Pieced: A Quilt Along

In preparation for the Hand Pieced Quilt Along, Patty and I are posting today about dealing with seam allowances when hand piecing. You might wonder what we are talking about–don’t you sew them down, just like with machine piecing? Actually, no! You sew through them, not over them. In other words, you let them fly free! 🙂

How to deal with seam allowances in hand piecing quilt blocks.

I’ve created a short video to show you exactly how to do this. It can feel a bit different at first, but you will get the hang of it in no time!

As always, please feel free to ask any questions you might have. I invite you to join our growing community for the Hand Pieced QAL over on Facebook–it’s a great way to interact with like-minded people and share our love for quilting and handwork.  And don’t forget to sign up for the  Hand Pieced QAL newsletter to make sure that you don’t miss any posts!

  • I am really enjoying these posts. Handsewing is a good thing. I might do a little more thank the EPP I am doing now

  • I am hoping that you are going to have some great tips for pressing? I have been hand piecing for 40 years and have never really known the ‘right’ way to go about it!. Loving all your videos and tips so far. xx
