The sixth block in the Book Club Hand Pieced Quilt Along is called Jo.
I bet you’ve already guessed that Jo is from Little Women. Symbolically, there are four triangles, representing the four sisters, all pointing toward a center square, which represents home.

Block Construction
You can cut the patches for Jo entirely from templates, or a combo of templates for the trapezoid pieces and rotary cut the rest.
Just like the Penelope block, this block is constructed in an unusual order.
I’m sharing the video that I made for the Penelope block, as it is constructed the same way. Attach the corner units to the center square and then go back and stitch up the seams between the corner units.
Here’ s a quick picture tutorial. Once the corner units are constructed layout your block like this:
Next, stitch opposite corner units to the center square.
You get this little bow tie unit. Next, stitch the remaining corner units to the center square. Because you have not stitched down the seam allowances, it’s quite easy to stitch these seams.
Now, all the corner units are stitched to the center square, but are still not stitched to each other.
Lastly, stitch together the seams between the corner units in the same way.
Easy peasy! I just love this block! I can’t wait to see yours!

The Book Behind the Block
Oh, Little Women, this is one of my all-time favorite books. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve read it! I learn a little something about how to be a better person every time I do. Need a little mothering inspiration? Marmee will help you. Feeling like you don’t quite fit in? Jo understands. Want to buy beautiful things? Meg feels you. And have you seen the 2019 movie? It’s my very favorite adaptation…almost as good as the book.
