Book Club QAL: Cathy Block

Book Club QAL: Cathy Block

The fifth block in the Book Club Hand Pieced Quilt Along is called Cathy.

Cathy comes from the book Scarlet Feather by Maeve Binchy. When Cathy Scarlet starts up a catering business with her friend Tom Feather, a long-time dream quickly starts to spin her life out of control–just like our block!

Block Construction

This is one of the few blocks that can be easily cut with either a rotary cutter or with templates. Choose whichever you find easier.

The Cathy block features traditional partial seams. If you’ve ever been nervous about tackling partial seams–have no fear! We are going to walk you through it step by step.

I’ve created a video that takes you through it one step at a time.

Make sure that you also check out Patty’s step-by step tutorial as well.

The Book Behind the Block

Maeve Binchy is another of my all-time favorite authors. One of my favorite things about many of her books is that they take place in the same city, so you get to see the main character of one book appear in a minor role in another book. It’s such a fun way to “check-in” on characters that you’ve become fond of. Cathy Scarlet is one of those characters that you meet in Scarlet Feather, and then you get glimpses of in other books. It’s a wonderful story of determination and staying true to your dreams.

Make sure to check out Patty’s Cathy block over on the Elm Street Quilts blog.
